Man indicted on charges of shooting Simpson County deputy
A man accused of shooting a Simpson County sheriff’s deputy in March was indicted Wednesday on multiple charges, including attempted murder of a police officer.
Ben Wyatt, 28, of Franklin, is accused of shooting Deputy Eddie Lawson, who had come to his Cherry Street home to serve a warrant on March 10, Kentucky State Police said.
Lawson was shot in the pelvis and right knee before shooting Wyatt in the arm, state police said.
The original warrant for Wyatt’s arrest had been for failure to appear on charges of fourth-degree assault, menacing, and terroristic threatening, state police said.
Wyatt is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, first-degree assault of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and two counts of being a persistent felony offender, state police said. The case is now pending trial in Simpson Circuit Court.
