School bus carrying students hooks live power line

A Fayette County school bus was stranded in a Lexington intersection for about an hour Wednesday morning after hooking a power line with a mirror.

The bus, carrying four students, an adult monitor and the driver, was headed to Harrison Elementary School when a bus mirror became entangled in the line about 7:50 a.m. at Fifth Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to police and school district spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall.

Emergency crews assumed the line was live, so the students and adults remained on the bus until Kentucky Utilities workers arrived about 8:40 a.m. to cut power to the line, police Lt. Jonathan Bastian said.

The students’ parents were notified, Deffendall said.

There were no injuries.

The electrical line was likely pulled loose during the storms that moved through the region late Tuesday and early Wednesday, Bastian said.
