Kentucky community college president announces he’ll retire a year before his contract ends
Kentucky Community and Technical College System President Jay Box will retire at the end of this fiscal year, the system said in a news release Friday afternoon.
Box announced at a meeting of the KCTCS Board of Regents on Friday that he will leave office effective June 30, a year before his contract is up.
KCTCS said a search committee will be formed soon, and a search firm will be hired to help conduct a national search for Box’s successor.
Box has been president since January 2015, when he replaced outgoing KCTCS President Michael McCall. His contract ends June 30, 2021, a KCTCS spokeswoman said Friday.
She said his immediate plans are to spend more time with his family.
“Dr. Box has been a wonderful leader for KCTCS, and he will be missed by the board as well as the faculty and staff,” Board of Regents Chair Gail Henson said in the release. “His focus on student success was evident from day one, and he never lost that focus. He has been a transformer for the system, catapulting Kentucky’s community colleges into the national spotlight with his work on the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board and the Rebuilding America’s Middle Class board.”
In September, the Board of Regents considered a recommendation that would have given Box a $50,000 per year pay raise, as well as an additional $200,000 in deferred compensation if he stayed in his job for two years.
The board did not approve the raise, and Box asked the board to table the motion.
Box has been with KCTCS since 2002.
