Centre College announced Wednesday that Milton C. Moreland will be the twenty-first president of the college.

Moreland was picked unanimously by an 18-member search committee, according to the university. He will be replacing John Roush, who will retire this year after holding the position for 22 years.

“It will be a significant privilege to serve in this leadership role and I look forward to working with the entire campus community to continue the College’s focus on fostering a diverse and inclusive learning community that prepares young people for citizenship and leadership in an increasingly complex and challenging world,” Moreland said in a news release.

Moreland is originally from Boise, Idaho, and is known for his work in archaeology and religious studies.

Moreland currently serves as the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Rhodes College. He’s set to start his term at Centre College on July 1, according to the college.

“One of my key goals as president of Centre College is to assure that our graduates go out into the world with a sense of purpose and meaning, combined with the needed confidence to positively impact their communities and the world,” Moreland said. “Centre graduates should be prepared to maneuver through a complicated world and an unknown future, grounded through an education that prepares them for what we don’t know is even coming.”

Moreland and his wife, Dina, will live in Centre College’s Craik House.
