Former Kentucky education commissioner in running for head of schools in Louisiana

A former Kentucky head of education has applied to lead schools in Louisiana.

Former Kentucky Education Commissioner Wayne D. Lewis Jr. is one of more than 20 who have applied to the position, according to The Advocate in Baton Rouge.

Lewis taught in New Orleans public schools before eventually becoming an associate professor at the University of Kentucky and being hired as Kentucky’s head of education. Lewis resigned as Kentucky education commissioner in December 2019 after Gov. Andy Beshear hired a new state Board of Education.

Lewis was named the dean of Belmont University’s School of Education not long after resigning as Kentucky’s education commissioner.

Louisiana’s current superintendent of education, John White, has held the position since January 2012. He announced his resignation in January and is set to step down in March, according to Baton Rouge news station WAFB.

Kentucky is still searching for Lewis’ replacement, with Kevin C. Brown currently serving as the interim commissioner.
