University of Kentucky secures $66 million for new USDA research lab

The University of Kentucky has secured nearly $66 million in federal money to build a new U.S. Department of Agriculture cattle and equine research lab.

The location of the new research facility has not yet been determined. Also unclear is when the new USDA research lab will open, UK officials said Monday.

“The university is not ready at this time to make any announcements regarding location of a lab,” said Jay Blanton, a spokesman for the university. “ We are in ongoing discussions with the USDA regarding the scope and location of the lab. We will keep everyone apprised as this process unfolds and a formal announcement is appropriate.”

U.S. Sen Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, announced the $65.9 million funding agreement in December after it was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. It received final approval earlier this year.

The research at the new facility will focus on both the cattle and horse industries, according to information released by UK and McConnell’s office.

“The resources and support Sen. McConnell has secured for a Forage Animal Product Lab at UK’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environment will help us not simply continue our progress but ensure that we can accelerate it on behalf of Kentucky’s agricultural economy,” said UK President Eli Capilouto.

McConnell said the lab will further Kentucky’s reputation as a leader in agricultural research.

“Throughout the country, agriculture and business leaders are looking to Kentucky because of our cutting-edge advancements and the University of Kentucky is helping drive that progress,” McConnell said.

Blanton said Monday it’s too early to say how many new jobs would be created at the new research facility. There is another USDA research facility at Western Kentucky University, according to the USDA web site. That research center focuses on solutions to environmental issues caused by farming.
