Graduation dates, make-up dates in Fayette schools? Here’s the latest.

If the Fayette County Public Schools district does not miss any more days, tentatively May 28 would be the last day of school and high school graduations would be scheduled on May 28 and 29, officials said Monday.

School graduation dates are not firmly set until mid-spring, after the threat of bad weather has passed and all make-up days have been announced.

Other revisions to the 2019-2020 Fayette County Public Schools academic calendar were made public during Monday’s Fayette County Board of Education meeting.

As of March 9, students in FCPS have missed two days and two hours of school due to illness and winter weather.

Friday, March 20, 2020, will remain a day off for students. To make up for missed instructional days, school will be in session on Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday May 28, 2020.

Fayette school officials have not said whether classes will be canceled this week because of the coronavirus.

The state now has 6 confirmed cases of the virus, Gov. Andy Beshear said late Monday. One of those was a Fayette County resident, and a second tested positive in Fayette, though it is not clear where they lived.

Christ the King Catholic School in Lexington closed Monday because of coronavirus concerns. It was set to re-open Tuesday.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, school district officials said they knew of no public health risk to the district as a result of the first Lexington patient and had just learned that a second patient had tested positive in Fayette.

Superintendent Manny Caulk said he would be in contact with health department officials and the mayor after Monday’s school board meeting about the second case and whether there was impact on school children, their families or schools.

District spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said the health department has been consistent in saying they don’t recommend closing schools at this point.

“We’re going to make decisions based on facts, based on data and not out of fear,” Caulk said.
