Note to weary students, families: Fayette schools’ last instructional day is official.

The last instructional day for Fayette County Public Schools will be May 27, school board members decided Monday night as students continued to learn at home for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year.

May 19, which would have been a day off, has been converted into an instructional day. The calendar approved Monday allows the school district to meet a state requirement to have 1062 instructional hours for the 2019-2020 school year.

To curb the spread of the coronavirus, Gov. Andy Beshear canceled in person classes beginning March 16 and recently said those classes would not resume this academic year. Fayette, like all districts in the state, is participating in Kentucky’s non-traditional instruction program in which a plan is created for every student to learn from home.

The last day for teachers will be May 28, Fayette board members said at Monday’s monthly board meeting conducted virtually as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Board member Tyler Murphy asked if some days for review of school work could be built into the calendar to balance out the workload for families and students. The district has scaled back on some academic demands for students after families expressed concerns.

Superintendent Manny Caulk said that time would be devoted to review and the school year would wind down somewhat as it does in a typical year.

School board members also voted to ask the Kentucky Board of Education to waive some elective credits for some students at risk of dropping out or aging out of high school.
