Authorities are investigating the death of a 13-year-old Wayne County Middle School student who collapsed in a bathroom at the school on Tuesday.

Wayne County Coroner Gordon Hicks said the girl had a “medical episode.” The teen had had some medical problems, but they were not severe, Hicks said.

Emergency workers tried to revive the girl and transported her to the Wayne County Hospital. Hicks pronounced her dead there.

The initial call to EMS was about 8:30 a.m., Hicks said.

The coroner said he could not release the girl’s name Tuesday afternoon because some family members had not been notified.

The girl’s body was being transported to Louisville Tuesday afternoon for an autopsy.

Linda Jones, a spokeswoman for Wayne County Schools, said the student was responsive when she was taken to the hospital early Tuesday from the school.

There were counselors available at the school Tuesday for students who needed them, said Jones.
