A Spanish immersion teacher at Northern Elementary School in Lexington has been appointed as the newest school board member in Scott County.

Wendy Young was appointed upon the resignation of long-time board member Jo Anna Fryman. Young will represent District #2 in Georgetown, a city that borders Lexington.

“My overall experience as an educator provides me with a unique perspective when making decisions for students and staff in Scott County,” Young said Wednesday.

Young said she’s been a Scott County resident her entire life, as well as an educator for over 25 years, with the past 14 years spent in Fayette County.

She’s a 4th and 5th grade teacher in Northern Elementary’s Spanish immersion program, focusing on reading, writing, and social studies. Her students have her half of the day. The other half of the day, they learn math and science in Spanish.

Her focus in Scott County “will be to do what is best for students while supporting those who make a difference for our children,” Young said.

Elsewhere in Central Kentucky, there’s precedence for a teacher serving on a school board in another district.

Fayette County school board chairman Tyler Murphy teaches high school in Boyle County.
