Clark County Schools’ superintendent shut down in-person classes and met with school bus drivers Tuesday after a “large volume” of transportation staff didn’t show up for work.

Superintendent Molly McComas said out of 52 drivers, about eight to ten were sick Monday and Tuesday.

Another eight drivers called in and were absent Tuesday.

“I can not speak to what they were upset about,” McComas said. She said she met with drivers and discussed their concerns.

McComas said “drivers want to be more supported, and we want to respond to that.”

“My only comment is that we had staff out with illness and other issues. This provided us an opportunity to meet with different groups, including transportation. We have reviewed plans and hope to be back in school tomorrow,” McComas told the Herald-Leader.

She said students will stay at the heart of decisions.

Clark County Schools had students learn from home Tuesday after “experiencing a large volume of staff absences today, especially with transportation,” school district officials said in a message to families.

The district took an at home learning day allowed under the state’s non-traditional instruction program.

WKYT reported that McComas called a meeting with transportation workers for Tuesday morning.

A Clark school bus driver on social media asked parents and school officials to support transportation staff who had discipline issues with students. He declined to talk to the Herald-Leader.
