Updated: Lexington school administrator injured in fight between 2 students
An ambulance was called to Lafayette High School Friday to evaluate an administrator who sustained an injury during a fight between two students, said Fayette County Public Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall.
There was an altercation between two students during lunch in the cafeteria, Deffendall said. The fight was quickly contained, she said.
Lexington police spokeswoman Hannah Sloan said Fayette County Public Schools police has jurisdiction on all school properties. The only times the Lexington Police Department responds to a call on school property would be if their assistance was requested or if they were responding to a distress signal, she said.
“Today our officers responded to a distress call from FCPS Police shortly before noon. While in route, the distress call was cancelled,” said Sloan. “A couple of our officers still went to the school to see if our assistance was needed. When they arrived on scene, they were told LPD’s assistance was no longer needed. We did not respond to the original call for service.”
Deffendall said the administrator, who she did not identify, is seeking follow up care but was not transported by ambulance. She did not describe the administrator’s condition.
It is unclear whether either student was charged.
“We cannot comment on student disciplinary matters,” Deffendall said.
On Friday afternoon, principal Bryne Jacobs told families in a letter that there was an altercation between two students during the first lunch period Friday.
“The fight was quickly contained and did not disrupt instruction in any way,” he said.
“Normally, I would not send you a letter about a fight in the cafeteria,”Jacobs said. “However, one of our administrators was injured during the incident today and we called for an ambulance to evaluate his condition. Since the call for assistance went out over the police scanner, it attracted media attention.”
