Police used pepper spray to break up a fight at Tates Creek High School Tuesday, according to a letter sent to the families of the school.

The incident started when two students got into an altercation outside during dismissal in the bus loading area, school officials said in their message to the campus community.

While staff were attempting to deescalate the disorder, another fight broke out and a crowd swarmed around it, according to the letter. Students in the crowd refused to comply with commands from Fayette County Public Schools police officers and the situation escalated, so officers used pepper spray to regain control of the area.

“Several other students and officers who were in the area experienced side effects from the spray,” the letter read. “Emergency responders were called to provide care to the students and staff who had a reaction to the spray.”

Everyone has since recovered, school officials said in the letter.

Disciplinary action will be taken against the students involved in the altercation, the letter said.
