Danville superintendent, one year into job, resigns position to lead private KY school
Greg Ross, superintendent of Danville Independent Schools, is resigning to lead a private school for inner-city boys in Louisville.
“At this time in my life, it is imperative that I do what I feel my heavenly Father is directing me to do,” Ross, a former Fayette County principal, said in a Thursday announcement.
The resignation is effective June 10. Ross started the Danville position on July 1, 2022.
He said he will be assuming the role of Head of School for the West End School. Officials there confirmed the post.
“It is a school focused on changing the trajectory of inner-city males in a community with many challenges, but lots of love!” Ross said.
Ross said the Danville school board has stuck by him and supported him every step of the way.
Board of Education Chair Esther Rugerio said “On behalf of the board, we are forever grateful for the impact Dr. Ross has made at Danville Schools. He has cared for and prioritized our student’s success. This was a hard decision for him to make, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
In his time as superintendent, “Dr. Ross has made positive changes and has been heavily involved in the community and our school buildings,” said Rugerio.
He attended many arts, athletic and community events, congratulated and spotlighted teachers and students weekly, and restructured the Central Office to better streamline leadership and operations, “among his accomplishments,” she said.
“My decision to resign is by no means a reflection of any negativity with the school board,” Ross said. “I could not have asked for a more supportive and collaborative group of community leaders to work with.”
Whoever becomes the next superintendent will be “blessed with an amazing team of leaders to work with,” he said.
“I have had so much to be proud of and be thankful for,” Ross said. “... I am so grateful for each experience shared.”
The move means one less Black school superintendent in Kentucky. Prior to that decision, Ross was one of only six in the state.
