An East Jessamine High School football player died over the weekend, school officials said Monday.

“Joseph Seagraves... passed away this weekend and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time,” principal Chris Hawboldt said in a letter to families.

District officials did not provide the cause of death. Coroner’s office officials in Fayette and Jessamine counties said they did not investigate the death.

A team of counselors will be available to meet with students individually and in groups beginning Monday at the Nicholasville school.

“Our priority is to ensure that our students are supported with whatever assistance that they need,” said Hawboldt. “... This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for our entire school, especially our students.”

Seagraves was a sophomore on the varsity team, according to district officials and the roster.

A post on the Jaguars football Facebook page said counselors would gather with the team in the weight room Monday.

“The team needs some time to grieve and heal together,” the post said.
