Fayette County Public Schools bus involved in crash on district’s first day of school
A Fayette County Public Schools bus was involved in a collision on the first day of school Wednesday, according to Lexington police.
The crash happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of South Broadway and Mason Headley Road. Lt. Joe Anderson with the Lexington Police Department said the bus was traveling outbound when a vehicle made a left turn in front of the bus in the intersection, causing the collision.
There was minor damage to both vehicles, but the bus was able to continue its route after a 30-minute delay, according to Anderson. No injuries were reported.
There were three students on the bus, according to Fayette County Public Schools spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith. The bus was headed to Jessie Clark Middle School.
The incident wasn’t the only involving a Lexington school bus Wednesday morning. A school bus also stalled on Harrodsburg Road near Man O’ War Boulevard. The traffic management center said the children on board the bus were safely transferred to another bus and taken away from the scene.
The bus was headed to Southern Middle School, Davidson-Smith said.
A bus headed to Henry Clay High School Wednesday morning broke down at Rebecca Drive and Tates Creek Road. District officials did not comment on that incident.
A Fayette County Public Schools bus was also involved in a minor crash last week. After that incident, Davidson-Smith said the driver would review footage of the incident and take additional training as needed.
Rest of first day ‘smooth and normal’
At about 3 p.m., district spokeswoman Davidson-Smith described the day as “smooth and normal” and at 5:30 p.m., “smooth and typical for a first day.”
Fayette Superintendent Demetrus Liggins said in a statement there was “heart-warming” excitement on the first day.
”After visiting several campuses today, it was heart-warming to witness the excitement and enthusiasm among students, teachers, and staff as they embarked on this new academic year,” Liggins said. “The positive atmosphere and dedication to creating a vibrant learning environment are truly commendable. I look forward to a productive and successful school year ahead.”
