Fire at Lexington Catholic High School leads to dismissal of students; no injuries
A small fire at Lexington Catholic High School Thursday led to the evacuation and early dismissal of students, but no injuries, school officials said.
There was a small fire in the science hall of the school, according to a message sent to school parents. The fire was contained quickly but the building was evacuated due to smoke.
Lexington Fire District Major Derek Roberts said the Lexington Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the building. No injuries were reported and no other details about the 11:30 a.m. run were available.
Lexington Catholic Principal Mathew George and President Rob Rumpke told families that all students were safe.
“The evacuation was prompted by the presence of smoke from an experiment in one of the science classrooms. Emergency protocols were immediately enacted, and students and staff were evacuated to the football field,” the message said. “The Lexington Fire Department quickly assessed the situation and, after deeming it safe, students were allowed back into Bueter Gym.”
School officials announced Thursday night that in person classes would be canceled Friday and it would be a virtual learning day.
A play and a meeting scheduled for Thursday night were canceled.
