A 15-year-old girl was hit and killed by a Clark County school bus Tuesday morning, said county coroner Neal Oliver.

Oliver identified the girl late Tuesday afternoon as McKenna Letcher, of Winchester. McKenna was pronounced dead at the scene and had been trying to cross Veterans Memorial Parkway, near the intersection of Ironworks Road, when she was hit by the bus, OIiver said.

McKenna was a student at George Rogers Clark High School.

“Please keep all parties involved in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this terrible event,” school district officials wrote in a Facebook post.

Clark County Schools Superintendent Dustin Howard said grief counselors, pastoral staff and other mental health support staff will be available at all Clark County schools for as long as needed.

“Please keep the student’s family, along with the entirety of our school system and community, in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this very difficult time,” Howard wrote in a Facebook post.

Gov. Andy Beshear posted about the incident on social media and asked people to keep the Clark County community in their thoughts.

“My heart aches for the family and friends of this precious child lost in this tragedy,” Beshear said.
