Will Fayette County and other KY school districts hold class the rest of the week?

Fayette County Public Schools is canceling after-school and evening activities on Wednesday because of inclement weather from this week’s winter storm.

District officials will make a decision Wednesday if classes will be canceled for the rest of the week, said district spokeswoman Dia Davidson-Smith.

“We plan to make a decision on Thursday and Friday sometime tomorrow,” she told the Herald-Leader Tuesday afternoon.

Rowan and Anderson County school districts are canceling classes for the rest of the week — through Friday — opting for at home learning.

Several other districts, including Fayette, are having traditional snow days Wednesday.

Kentucky is expected to get the most severe cold snap the state has seen in two years with wind chills below zero this week.

Snow day options

According to a Tuesday statement from Kentucky Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher, school districts have several options for taking snow days.

Weather Canceled: The district can take a “W: Weather Canceled” day. These days would need to be made up before the end of the year to meet the 170-day, 1,062 hours of instruction for a traditional calendar, or 1,062 hours of instruction for a variable school calendar.

NTI Days: Each district has 10 Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) days that can be used for weather, health and safety. The NTI plan for these days must be approved by the Kentucky Department of Education prior to using these days.

Emergency Day Waivers: If the district missed more than 20 school days due to an emergency, the commissioner of education could approve the emergency waiver. The first 20 days would need to be added back into the calendar and the waiver would count for days missed over and above the first 20 days. Attendance is waived for the amount of time missed over 20 days.
