A video that surfaced on social media over the weekend that contained “derogatory remarks” prompted Monroe County Superintendent Amy Thompson to issue a statement Monday against racism.

“This video was not taken at school or during a school event. However, we want to reassure our students, parents and community of our stance against racism, prejudice and discrimination,” Thompson told the Herald-Leader in an email.

Thompson’s anti-racism statement said in part, “We do not tolerate racism, prejudice or discrimination in any form.”

Megan Bennett, a parent in Monroe County Schools, told the Herald-Leader in a social media message the video included people in the community shouting a racial slur.

“The video is very disturbing,” said Bennett.

“But in a spotlight, it brings awareness to the change that needs to happen and the conversation regarding racism,” Bennett said. “This has affected an entire community and many have been exposed to racial trauma and secondary trauma. We need help. We need outside help. “

Thompson did not respond to questions about whether she had launched an investigation or whether anyone had been disciplined.

Monroe County is about 2.5 hours south of Lexington.
