Metal detectors found a gun in a Bryan Station High School student’s backpack Tuesday, according to a letter sent out to school families.

The school’s administrative team and the Fayette County Public Schools Police Department were contacted when school ambassadors discovered the gun, according to the letter. Appropriate disciplinary actions are being taken, the district said.

The campus was placed on heightened alert during the investigation but never placed on lockdown, according to the letter. No other incidents were reported.

“This is an excellent opportunity for all of us to remind our students that situations like this are extremely serious,” Bryan Station Executive Principal Eric Hale said in the letter. “Students and parents should both understand that bringing a weapon onto school property is a felony under state law.”

Students and families can report information anonymously through the STOP tip line on the school’s website, the letter said.

“Safety is all of our responsibility, and the partnership between home and school has never been more important than it is now in our school community,” Hale said in the letter.
