A gas leak reported Tuesday afternoon near the University of Kentucky was cleared by just after 5 p.m., according to a message from the university.

The leak was reported at Woodland Avenue and Rose Lane, near several sorority and fraternity houses. People were told to avoid the area.

A third-party contractor hit a Columbia Gas line on a property next to the university, a Columbia Gas spokesperson said. Traffic in the area was being rerouted, UK spokesperson Jay Blanton said.

The initial alert was sent by the university shortly before 2:50 p.m, and was cleared around 5 p.m.

Earlier this month, another gas leak was reported in the same area at the Schmidt Vocal Arts Center on Rose Street.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify which company hit the gas line.
