The KY120 United-Fayette teachers union on Tuesday asked Fayette County Public Schools officials to close schools for the rest of the week — and announce it as soon as possible — amid “extreme cold” and roads they said are “unfit” for travel.

Fayette County Public Schools officials did not immediately comment Tuesday night.

In-person classes have been canceled in the district since Monday, Jan. 25, with non-traditional instruction or virtual learning in effect instead.

“Currently many roads remain covered in snow and ice that are unfit for safe travel in our communities,” a statement released by the union Tuesday said. “Additionally, extreme cold temperatures have led our governor to encourage Kentuckians to stay indoors to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.”

“While school closures are not ideal, our families and our staff can plan best when given plenty of advanced notice,” the statement said. “Closing for the remainder of the week will send a clear message to our community, families and staff that student and staff safety is of the utmost important to our district.”

The group said they were concerned about employees who were asked to work outside for prolonged periods.

Nema Brewer, a founding member of the group, said at a minimum, KY 120 United is asking district officials to have NTI instead of in-person classes on Thursday and Friday.

“And we are asking our custodial staff and grounds (staff) working in the cold be allowed the appropriate time to get warm,” Brewer said.
