A visitation and memorial service will be held Feb. 14 at Lexington’s Calvary Baptist Church for former Fayette County Schools Superintendent Tom Shelton, according to his obituary.

Shelton, 62, died in his sleep Feb. 8 at his home in Lexington.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the service will begin at 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 150 E. High St.

“Tom was a passionate leader for public education and spent his life devoted to Kentucky’s public schools, serving students, educators, and communities as a superintendent, statewide education leader, and trusted advocate,” his obituary on Kerr Brothers Funeral website said.

Shelton was FCPS superintendent from 2011 until 2014, when he resigned to become executive director of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents. He also previously served as superintendent of Daviess County Schools.

At the time of his death, he was the president and CEO of the United Way of the Bluegrass.

Shelton is survived by his wife, Sharon Hays; his daughters, Abby Shelton Sizemore (Justin), and Audrey Shelton; his granddaughters, Ann-Thomas and Edie Sizemore; his sister, Debbie Shelton Miller; his former wife, Gwen Shelton (Heather Thomsen); and his step-children, Austin England and Grace England.

In lieu of flowers, family members have asked people to make a donation to the United Way of the Bluegrass by visiting uwbg.org/give or to Protect our Schools KY online.
