Lexington’s Lafayette High School principal told families that a serious incident occurred Tuesday involving the use of highly inappropriate and offensive language by a faculty member.

“We are committed to maintaining a learning environment defined by safety, transparency, and mutual respect,” Principal Anthony Orr said. “I am writing to inform you of a serious incident that occurred yesterday involving the use of highly inappropriate and offensive language by a faculty member.”

No other information was provided about what the teacher said. Orr said he is addressing this matter with the utmost seriousness.

He said he met with the teacher immediately Tuesday afternoon to address the reports. It wasn’t immediately clear if the teacher was facing discipline as of Wednesday. An investigation was initiated this week.

“We are following all district protocols regarding personnel and professional conduct working alongside the (Fayette County Public Schools) Human Resources Office,” he said.

The school said in a statement that members of the administration and school-based counselors will be present Monday to have discussion with students. The statement also said the school “deeply” regrets that students were subjected to the language.

“This behavior does not reflect the values of Lafayette High School, FCPS, or our commitment to an inclusive education for every student,” the school said.
