A discussion of the Fayette County Public Schools proposed tentative budget for the 2026-2027 school year is on Monday’s school board planning agenda, but the district hasn’t yet shared any budget documents.

The Fayette County Board of Education agenda for Monday’s meeting, posted on the district’s website Friday, did not include any tentative budget documents.

School district officials had not responded to the Herald-Leader’s requests for a copy by Sunday afternoon.

District officials said last week the next budget update, including the proposed tentative budget for fiscal year 2026-27, will be provided at the school board’s planning meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 11.

Details of the upcoming budget have taken on new significance as the district’s troubled financial situation includes the reduction of more than 115 district support positions between the 2025-26 school year and the upcoming 2026-27 school year, a $110 million loan request and a fund balance so low that it may be in violation of state law.

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins and Interim Chief Financial Officer Kyna Koch revealed last month that the district’s finances had been misstated since at least 2008.

The school board is expected to vote on the tentative budget at its May 21 monthly meeting.

State law requires that the Board of Education adopt a tentative budget for 2026-2027 by May 30, 2026.

The 2025-2026 tentative budget was $834.3 million.
