Hundreds of Fayette County students would move schools under proposed redistricting plan
An estimated 749 elementary school students in Fayette County are being redistricted as part of a proposed plan for the 2027-28 school year, according to documents from a May 14 district meeting and shared by school officials Thursday.
The rezoning work is related to the expected fall 2027 opening of Helen Caise Wade Elementary on Greendale Road. Most likely to be affected are families with students attending Booker T. Washington, Coventry Oak, Meadowthorpe, and Sandersville elementary schools, district officials said in a news release Thursday night.
The district’s Right Size, Bright Future committee has finished a draft proposal for new elementary school attendance boundaries. A preliminary boundary map is posted at fcps.net/RightSize, where families can also enter their student’s home address to see how the changes might impact them in the 2027-28 school year.
The plan, called Plan 2B, entails reassigning 300 students from Coventry Oak to the new Helen Caise Wade Elementary. The plan also moves a few students from Meadowthorpe to Helen Caise Wade, 115 students from Booker T. Washington to Coventry Oak, a handful of Sandersville students to Meadowthorpe, 42 students from Meadowthorpe to Sandersville, and about 200 Sandersville students to Helen Caise Wade.
FCPS will host a communitywide meeting where families and the public can learn how the proposed redistricting lines were determined, district officials said. Committee members and FCPS staff will also be on hand to accept feedback and answer questions.
The Feedback Session is 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at STEAM Academy, 1555 Georgetown Road.
Those who cannot join in person can share input through an online form.
“Adjusting our school attendance boundaries is an important step that allows Fayette County Public Schools to: safely balance student enrollment across campuses, ensure equitable access to educational resources, programs, and staff, (and) create sustainable attendance zones that support future community growth”, district officials said in a news release.
The proposal is not final. The Fayette County Board of Education is expected to consider the rezoning proposal in June.
