City, state working to help laid off Fayette County school employees
Lexington city officials are teaming up with the Kentucky Career Center — Bluegrass/American Job Center to host a virtual job fair for Fayette County Public School employees who will lose their jobs come July 1. The virtual job fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. Employers from across the state are invited to participate.
The district announced earlier this month 120 positions have been eliminated in an effort to slash spending as Kentucky’s second-largest district faces financial uncertainty. The 120 positions range from high-level administrators to hourly employees. Some of those positions were open. It’s not clear how many people have actually been laid off. “This is an important opportunity to help Fayette County Public Schools,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “These are our neighbors and friends who are struggling right now.” WORK-Lexington, the city’s primary work force initiative, is designed to help people find jobs.
“Through strong partnerships with employers and state and local organizations, we are able to connect these employees with essential services, resources and job opportunities they need to take their next steps,” Gorton said.
