FCPS superintendent, placed on leave, files appeal with KY attorney general

Suspended Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins on Tuesday filed a formal Open Meetings Act appeal with Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman.

Liggins is asking the attorney general to reverse the Fayette County Board of Education’s June 24 denial when he accused board members of violating the Open Meetings Act. He also wants the attorney general to declare unlawful the school board’s June 10 closed session when he was placed on paid leave, his attorney Amos Jones said.

After being placed on leave, Liggins and Jones demanded that his leave be rescinded because they believed the state open meetings law was violated when the action was voted on. The school board disagreed. Liggins is now asking Coleman’s office to step in.

FCPS has hired a law firm to review Liggins’ employment and the school board has placed him on paid leave pending the outcome of the review.
