Naked and high, he barged into a party — and groped a woman who sounded like his ex, he says

When a party crasher showed up at a Portland, Ore. housewarming earlier this year, he didn’t exactly fly under the radar: He was drunk, high and completely naked — and he groped one of the party guests before getting chased out of the house, police said.

Robert Engelsman, 43, was sentenced to four years and two months in prison this week for groping the woman on June 25, the Oregonian reports. Engelsman pleaded no contest to charges of attempted sex abuse and burglary. Once released, Engelsman will have to register as a sex offender.

Engelsman told police that his night had begun when he sniffed glue and drank malt liquor. Then, he stripped off his clothes at 1 a.m. near the home that he would later barge into in northeast Portland.

Engelsman told police that he stripped naked because he was getting hot, KPTV reports.

Hearing a woman’s voice that sounded like his ex-girlfriend coming from the party, Engelsman told police that he entered the home and went to the kitchen. Witnesses told police that Engelsman seemed to be aroused — and that he quickly lifted up the woman’s skirt so that he could start groping her and pressing his body against her, a probable cause affidavit reviewed by the WKBN said.

“I really want to apologize,” Engelsman said at his sentencing on Tuesday, according to the Oregonian. “And I hope that the victim is all right. And I don’t ever wish any harm upon anyone like that. That wasn’t me that night.”

After the groping, Engelsman was forced out of the party by other party guests, KWBN reports.

No one at the party had any idea who Engelsman was, KPTV reports

When police found Engelsman, he was alone in a nearby SUV wearing just a shirt, police said — and he’d sprayed lotion all over the car’s cloth seats.

“Glad they caught him,” one neighbor, who asked not to be named, told KATU. “That’s crazy.”

Engelsman told police that he tried hiding in the SUV because he suspected police might be on their way, KATU reports.

Engelsman was arrested that night and initially charged with sex abuse, attempted rape, burglary and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, KPTV reported after his arrest.

It wasn’t Engelsman’s first offense, or his first time using inhalants, according to police records.

Engelsman had been released from jail three days before crashing the party and groping the woman, KATU reports. He had just spent 30 days behind bars after being convicted of theft and inhalant usage.

“You made a choice to use the substances, and see what transpired,” Judge Gregory Silver told Engelsman at his sentencing, the Oregonian reports.
