Abandoned Great Pyrenees puppies found in snowy Utah mountains, photos show

A pair of snowmobilers stumbled upon a group of stranded puppies in rural Utah over the weekend, and now a shelter is working to find the abandoned dogs a new home.

Kat Perry and Cory Holt were snowmobiling in the Ant Flat area after a Thanksgiving Day snowfall when they discovered the Great Pyrenees puppies, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office’s search and rescue team said in a Facebook post Sunday.

That search and rescue team happened to be at the Monte Cristo trailhead on Sunday afternoon, so the team sent a rescue sled to help Perry and Holter get the three fluffy white dogs dogs to safety, deputies said.

“We don’t normally go save animals, but you know if you’re in the situation and you can help, well, we are happy to help,” said Weber County Search and Rescue Lt. Mark Horton, according to KSL.

The TV station reported that “while Horton said they were not able to get to the mother, they are returning Monday to try and save the mom.”

Deputies said Perry has “already made plans with the Hope’s Rescue group to find good homes for the puppies.”

The shelter is in nearby Ogden, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The Sheriff’s Office’s search and rescue team posted pictures of the puppies on Facebook, asking for donations to the Sheriff’s Office foundation. The fundraiser has brought in $130 from seven people as of Monday afternoon.

Horton speculated that the animals weren’t intentionally abandoned, according to KSL, which reported that “the breed is typically used for sheepherding and he theorizes that the mom left the herd to give birth and the sheepherders left to avoid the storm.”

Perry posted in the Utah Lost and Found Pets Facebook page on Saturday, sharing a picture that appears to show the mother dog and writing that the animal was 6.5 miles from the Monte Cristo parking lot on Ant Flat Road.

“Couldn’t catch her,” Perry wrote. “Recently had pups.”
