5-year-old caught driving to California to buy himself a Lamborghini, Utah cops say

He was on his way to purchase his dream car until the Utah Highway Patrol spotted him.

It’s likely he wasn’t coming home in the shiny, new Lamborghini that he intended to buy; the driver was just a 5-year-old boy, authorities said.

The Utah Highway Patrol first noticed the young driver on Interstate 15 in Ogden, which is around 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. It wasn’t an impaired driver as the troopers initially believed, but rather a kindergarten-aged boy driving his mother’s vehicle, according to a tweet from the highway patrol.

The boy left his home in his mom’s vehicle when she refused to buy him a Lamborghini, according to state troopers. “He decided he’d take the car and go to California to buy one himself,” the highway patrol tweeted.

He drove from his home at 17th Street near Lincoln Avenue in Ogden to I-15, which is at least two miles away, KJZZ reported.

It’s not clear where in California the little guy was headed. Ogden is around 870 miles away from Sacramento, so he may have needed a pit stop or two.

“He might have fallen short on the purchase amount, as he only had $3 in his wallet,” Utah Highway Patrol said. That would have put him around $264,966 shy of purchasing a 2020 Lamborghini Huracan, according to Car and Driver.

The highway patrol did not mention a punishment for the boy, but there’s a good chance a lengthy time out could be in his future.
