Ambulance driver charged with DUI after patient killed in Georgia crash, police say
An ambulance driver is charged with driving under the influence after a patient was killed in a Georgia crash, officials said.
The 66-year-old was riding unrestrained in an ambulance when it went off the road and rolled over in a ditch on Friday, Nov. 12, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said in a news release.
The patient — identified as Wilton Thomason Jr. — died from crash-related injuries, officials said.
The emergency vehicle wrecked at about 7:30 p.m. along West Campbellton Street in Fairburn, roughly 20 miles southwest of Atlanta, according to officers’ preliminary findings.
Now, the ambulance driver is facing charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, possession of an open container and failure to maintain lane. He’s also charged with DUI combination less safe, which means people can be charged if they are under the legal alcohol driving limit but are considered “less safe to drive,” the Lawson & Berry law firm said on its website.
Kevin McCorvey, 34, was arrested and taken to the Fulton County jail, officials said. The Georgia State Patrol didn’t list an attorney for him in a news release.
Officials said McCorvey had been driving in a non-emergency capacity at the time of the single-vehicle crash. A passenger in the ambulance wasn’t hurt, WXIA reported.
McCorvey was given a sobriety test at the site of the crash, which was under investigation as of Nov. 15, according to state officials and WSB-TV.
