A 41-year-old man died early Thursday, Dec. 23, in a head-on collision after trying to run his girlfriend’s vehicle off Interstate 10 near Phoenix, news sources report.

The fatal crash took place at 1:33 a.m. Mountain time, closing the highway until 5 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety told McClatchy News.

A man in a pickup truck had been trying to rear-end his girlfriend’s vehicle to run her off the road after a dispute, officials told KNXV.

But his truck veered into oncoming traffic, slamming head-on into a Dodge Durango, AZ Family reported. The other driver was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The boyfriend was pronounced dead at the scene, KSAZ reported. His girlfriend was unhurt.

“We don’t know at this point if he intentionally went [the] wrong way, or if there was an accident,” an Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson told the station.
