Dog chasing geese plunges into icy Colorado pond. Passerby slides on stomach to save it

A dog chasing geese ran onto a frozen Colorado pond and plunged through the ice, rescuers said.

The dog fell through the ice about 40 feet from the shore on Thursday, Jan. 27, South Metro Fire Rescue said. The dog was on a pond in Centennial, a town about 15 miles south of Denver.

“After a dog fell through the ice, an adult female tried to rescue it and also fell through,” rescuers said on Twitter.

A passerby saw the dog and its owner in the freezing water and rushed onto the pond. The person “slid on their stomach” to the water and pulled the dog and woman to safety, rescuers said.

Both people and the dog were not injured.

“No ice is safe ice,” rescuers said. “If an animal falls through, stay on shore and dial 911 immediately.”

Rescuers have seen similar rescues before. In Oregon, a dog wandered onto a frozen pond and plunged through the ice, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Rescuers used a small pond boat to get to the dog. Then a volunteer firefighter used a Leatherman tool to hook the dog’s collar and pull it to safety.
