TikTok rolls out 10-minute videos, and users are not happy: ‘YouTube territory’
TikTok has made the leap to allowing creators to post 10-minute videos on the app that originally made its name in bite-sized content. Since the news, social media has exploded with complaints and questions regarding the video app’s decision.
“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience,” a spokesperson for TikTok confirmed to news outlets. “Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”
Some social media users are not happy with the change that gives creators the ability to more than triple the length of videos, with many citing the existence of YouTube as a reason to not use the 10-minute feature.
“TikTok creeping in on YouTube territory,” wrote one Twitter user who was given access to the new function.
TikTok users were originally only able to upload 15 second videos, which expanded to 60 seconds and then up to 3 minutes in July of 2021.
But this new update that has rolled out to a select number of users has some wondering where TikTok would draw the line.
“Calling it now: TikTok will debut fully-formed mini shows by the end of the year,” wrote one Twitter user.
Some wondered what exactly makes TikTok unique with the addition of longer videos when YouTube exists.
Others complained about the addition for logistical reasons.
“I am not watching a 10 minute TikTok, I use this app because I have ADHD and my attention span is short,” wrote one user.
Some cited the ongoing misinformation crisis on TikTok that has become more rampant since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
“TikTok’s got a big misinformation problem on their hands right now,” wrote the Twitter user who has the newly released feature. “Bytedance’s Chinese roots will only fuel suspicion about any lack of motivation to be more on top of content moderation of Russian propaganda.”
One creator welcomed the addition of 10 minute videos — if TikTok paid creators like YouTube does.
Others were able to make jokes regarding the potentially drastic change.
“‘All Too Well’ 10 min version impact,” wrote one Taylor Swift fan, referencing the release of her longest song.
One user seemed to accept the new change, but was dismayed at its potential impacts.
“I just know my screen time will never recover,” wrote one brokenhearted user.
