Tree crashes through home and just misses sleeping 8-month-old, Louisiana cops say
A family got trapped inside their house after a tree crashed through their roof during a severe thunderstorm in Louisiana.
Katie Stewart, 67, was making breakfast for her husband, daughter and five great-grandchildren when a large tree crashed through the roof of their home on Wednesday, March 30, in Powhatan, according to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Stewart ran into the bedroom where her 8-month-old great-grandchild was sleeping, deputies said.
“Tree limbs surrounded the interior of the bedroom and her bed, where her great-grandchild was awakened and smiling at her as she checked on her well being,” deputies said in a news release.
Stewart said the family thought the baby died after the tree crashed through her room, according to KSLA.
The eight members of the family were freed and able to exit the home, deputies said. No one was injured during the incident.
Powhatan is about 180 miles northwest of Baton Rouge.
“Thank god we’re all OK,” Stewart said, according to the release.
