Star Wars The Mandalorian (carcinogen) & Mickey Mouse (methanol) hand sanitizers recalled
Hand sanitizers made in China, imported and distributed by New York-based Best Brands and marketed using Disney properties Mickey Mouse and Star Wars have been recalled.
Here’s what you need to know:
What’s been recalled?
▪ Lot No. 20D21 of Mickey Mouse Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, blue color, expiration date 6/30/2022.
▪ Lot No. 20E21 of The Mandalorian Hand Sanitizer Ethyl Alcohol 68%, blue/green color, expiration date 9/30/2022.
Best Brands Consumer Products’ FDA-posted recall notice says these were distributed nationwide to through three retail outlets and say they were pulled from shelves in April 2021 “for unrelated commercial reasons,” but neglect to state either the reasons or those outlets.
Both come in 2.11-ounce bottles.
Why have these hand sanitizers been recalled?
The Star Wars The Mandalorian hand sanitizer was found to have benzene, a carcinogen.
“Substantial exposure to benzene can occur through inhalation, oral, and skin and it may result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders, which can be life-threatening,” the recall notice states.
The Mickey Mouse hand sanitizer is the latest to be recalled for methanol, a common recall trigger early in the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Substantial exposure to methanol can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness, permanent damage to the central nervous system, or death,” the recall notice says. “Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products, and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.”
The deaths linked to methanol in hand sanitizers were from drinking the hand sanitizers.
