After a pack of dogs killed a 61-year-old woman in her front yard, authorities say her own dog stood guard over her body.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office was called to the woman’s home near Newalla shortly after noon on Sunday, April 24. Someone reported a woman was found dead.

Responding deputies found Anita Mears with injuries that looked as if she had been “stabbed multiple times,” according to a Facebook post from the department.

The Oklahoma County Medical Examiners Office ruled out a homicide, officials say, and determined she had been “attacked by multiple dogs.”

Authorities say her dog, who was hurt during the attack, was “standing guard” when deputies arrived.

“As for the dogs that attacked Ms. Mears, we don’t know whether they are wild dogs or neighborhood dogs, and because there were no witnesses, we may never know,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are warning folks to stay away from any packs of dogs that may be roaming the area.”

Newalla is about 25 miles east of downtown Oklahoma City.
