Three people were killed as they tried pushing a stalled vehicle off a busy interstate in metro Atlanta on Thursday, May 12, according to DeKalb County police.

The three-car crash occurred just before 2:45 a.m. on Interstate 20 westbound, just past I-285, authorities said in a news release. Three people died at the scene, and a fourth was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police haven’t released their names, pending notification of family.

Investigators determined the car had stalled in the road and was being pushed when the crash occurred, throwing one of the victims across a median wall, police said. At least three others suffered minor injuries.

Lanes were closed on both sides of the highway for hours but have slowly reopened, according to the police department. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

DeKalb County is about 10 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
