A 9-year-old boy died in Las Vegas after falling beneath the wheels of his mother’s SUV while playfully racing her on a neighborhood street, Nevada police told news outlets.

“It just appears to be an unfortunate, terrible accident,” Capt. Jeff Coday with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told KTNV.

The accident took place at 3:16 p.m. Monday, May 16, in a residential Las Vegas neighborhood, police told KVVU.

The boy was running alongside his mother’s Acura RDX, playfully racing her, when he fell beneath the SUV, police told KLAS.

The rear wheel ran over him, KTNV reported. He later died of his injuries at the hospital.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be involved, KVVU reported.

On Friday, May 13, a 15-year-old boy was critically injured after falling off a skateboard while being pulled alongside a Jeep, Las Vegas police said in a news release.

The teen fell beneath the wheels of the Jeep, which ran him over, police said. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
