FedEx driver trying to pass sideswipes pickup, leaving 1 dead, Louisiana cops say
A crash between a FedEx truck and a pickup left one dead in Louisiana, police said.
Just after 5 p.m. June 1, a 21-year-old Fed Ex driver from Lake Charles was westbound on state Highway 12 in Beauregard Parish, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police.
The FedEx truck crossed into the eastbound lane — in a no-passing zone — to pass a vehicle, but sideswiped a oncoming 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, the release said.
The passenger of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as 30-year-old David J. Riley from DeRidder, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The FedEx driver and the Silverado driver were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
Those involved in the crash were wearing seat belts, the release said.
The incident happened north of Lake Charles, which is about 126 miles west of Baton Rogue.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of a loved one,” FedEx told McClatchy News in a statement. “Safety is our highest priority and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities.”
