Police recovered 37 pounds of mail after catching an accused thief in action in California, officials said.

Along with the stolen mail, weighing more than one flat of mail, police found “numerous mailbox keys” early in the morning on Wednesday, July 27, the Emeryville Police Department said on Facebook.

“A surveillance monitoring service” initially notified police about a man opening mailboxes in the mail room of an apartment complexon Christie Avenue, police said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they located the man who ran, police said.

“The subject quickly surrendered after jumping from the garage into some bushes where two officers were standing on the perimeter,” according to police.

The suspect, a 42-year-old from Morgan Hill, was arrested, police said. He is facing various charges, including those relating to burglary, possession of burglary tools and fleeing from police.

Police told the US Postal Inspectors about the arrest, officials said.

“The recovered mail will be forwarded to USPS for redistribution,” the department said on Instagram.

The United States Postal Service did not immediately return McClatchy News’ request for comment.

Daily across the nation, 1.7 million packages are stolen or lost, CNBC reported in 2020.

To report mail theft, you can submit a report to USPS.

Emeryville is about 10 miles northeast of San Francisco.
