A man died and a woman was critically injured after a kayak tipped over in a lake, according to Indiana authorities.

Onlookers saw a kayak tip and its occupants begin to struggle at Robinson Lake near Hobart, Indiana, around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, July 31, according to an Aug. 1 news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

One of the witnesses swam out to the kayak – about 200 feet offshore – and began pulling a 54-year-old woman back to land, the release said.

A Hobart police officer, responding to a witness’s 911 call, arrived in time to help rescue the woman, according to officials. The Dyer woman was taken to a hospital where she remained in critical condition as of Aug. 1, the release said.

Other officers began searching for the second kayaker, a 19-year-old man, authorities said.

Officials said that about an hour later, a diver from the Crown Point Fire Department recovered the Dyer man’s body.

The pair had life jackets with them when they tipped, but they were not wearing them, conservation officials said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

Hobart is about 35 miles southeast of Chicago, just across the Indiana-Illinois state line.
