Husband dies when a roof rack comes flying through windshield, Michigan police say

A 31-year-old man was driving with his wife when an approaching car’s roof rack and kayak came loose, authorities in Michigan said.

The roof rack went flying toward his pickup truck, then pierced his windshield and killed him, according to Michigan State Police.

State troopers were called to the highway in Seney Township at about 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, according to a news release. They found Matthew Morgrette, of Colorado, fatally struck by the roof rack.

His wife was not injured, police said.

The kayak hit a third vehicle that was traveling east behind Morgrette’s truck, authorities said. It caused “minor damage but no injuries.”

The car with the roof rack had been traveling west along Michigan Highway 28, according to the release. A 58-year-old Wisconsin man was driving the car.

The fatal crash is under investigation. Results from the investigation will be sent to the Schoolcraft County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

Seney Township is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
