Several students are recovering after a car crashed into a charter school classroom, authorities in Georgia say.

Classes were underway at Ivy Preparatory Academy on Monday, Nov. 7, when a driver slammed into a room full of students, injuring five, according to DeKalb County police. Officers responded to the crash around 10:30 a.m.

“We heard screaming and the children running and we ran to the classroom and we saw a car that was actually inside the classroom,” Dr. Charcia Nichols, Head of Schools at the academy, told WXIA.

Videos from the scene showed the silver sedan lodged into the front of the school, which was roped off with crime scene tape, according to WAGA. The school closed for the remainder of the day.

The injured students suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to be OK, police said. Authorities have not released their ages.

The driver, who wasn’t named publicly, was also hurt and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

“We’ve spoken with the families of the injured students, and we’re grateful that all three are expected to make a full recovery,” Nichols said in a statement posted on the school’s Facebook page. “Our thoughts are with them and the entire Ivy Prep Community.”

According to its website, Ivy Prep Academy is Georgia’s first “single-gender, K-8 charter school for girls.” The school remained closed Tuesday in observance of Election Day and will hold virtual classes for the rest of the week.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
