A 14-year-old high school student died after he was struck by two vehicles while waiting for a school bus, according to Florida officials.

The teen was crossing a road just after 6:20 a.m. on Nov. 17 in Clermont when a Pontiac G6 struck him, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The teen was thrown into the opposite lane. The driver did not stop, the report says.

A driver in a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling south did not see the 14-year-old lying in the road and struck him, according to the report. The driver stopped and stayed at the scene.

The teen was pronounced dead on scene, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Clermont is about 25 miles west of Orlando.

The teen, who was a student at Lake Minneola High School in Minneola, had been waiting for the school bus at the time, ClickOrlando reported, citing district officials.

Lake County Schools spokeswoman Sherri Owens said in a statement to McClatchy News that it was a “very sad day” for the entire school community.

“We are reminding motorists to please drive with extra care near schools, particularly around the times when students are arriving in the morning or leaving in the afternoon,” she wrote.

Officials have not publicly identified the student.

Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office later found the first car that struck the student, but no one was inside Investigators took the car into evidence, and later in the day arrested a 57-year-old on a charge of leaving the scene involving death, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.

In a recorded message sent to parents, Lake Minneola High School Principal Linda Shepherd-Miller said it the news of the student’s death was a message “no principal ever wants to deliver,” according to WESH.

“This is a difficult day for all of us, but especially for the family members and those friends and classmates who knew him best,” she said in the message, according to WESH.
