Married couple dies in interstate crash that also kills wrong-way driver, NC cops say
A wrong-way driver was one of three people killed in a crash on a North Carolina interstate, officials said.
State troopers said a Nissan was “traveling northbound in the southbound lanes” of Interstate 40/85 early on Friday, Jan. 20. The car then hit a husband and wife’s Kia head-on, according to an email from Master Trooper Brian K. Martin and a preliminary news release from N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The Nissan driver and the married couple in the Kia died at the scene of the crash in Alamance County, state troopers said on Jan. 20.
The person behind the wheel of the Nissan was identified as 30-year-old Elexus Lolisha Shaw of Burlington. The two people in the Kia were 41-year-old driver Abraham Rubio and his wife, 44-year-old Ashley Mabe Rubio, both from Whitsett, according to state troopers.
Troopers were called to the crash about 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 20. It was reported near exit 150 in the Graham area, roughly 2 miles from where Shaw drove onto the interstate and about 25 miles east of Greensboro.
An investigation continues into the crash, which closed southbound lanes for about three hours near Jimmie Kerr Road. As of about 10:30 a.m., state troopers say they don’t know why Shaw was driving the wrong way on the interstate.
