Mom hiking with son, other Boy Scouts killed by falling tree, California officials say

A mother on a Boy Scout hike with her son died when a tree fell on her at a Cupertino park, California officials reported.

Firefighters responded to Rancho San Antonio County Park at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 5, but the woman died after being extricated, the Santa Clara County Fire Department said on Twitter. Her name has not been publicly released.

The Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council of Boy Scouts of America said in a statement to KNTV that a parent of a Boy Scout taking part in a planned hike at the park was killed.

“All Scouts are safe and there were no additional injuries,” the statement said, according to the station.

Other Boy Scouts and parents on the hike tried to lift the heavy tree off the woman but could not rescue her, KPIX reported.

“It’s just an unfortunate tragedy that you go out for a hike in a relatively calm morning and have this kind of thing happen,” chief ranger Matt Anderson with the MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District told the station.

The Stephen E. Abbors Trail has been closed but the park remains open, KGO reported.

Cupertino is a city of 59,000 people about 45 miles south of San Francisco.
