Truck carrying 1 million bees crashes, releasing thousands onto highway, Florida cops say
Thousands of bees were released onto a Florida highway after a truck that was carrying them crashed, officials said.
The pickup truck had about 1 million bees on board when a tractor-trailer reportedly ran into it early May 2. While some of the hives were left intact, the crash sent thousands of insects flying around U.S. Highway 301 in a non-aggressive manner, state troopers told WJXT.
The Florida Highway Patrol in a news release said the crash happened at about 3:15 a.m. near the intersection with Interstate 10 east. It was reported in the Baldwin area of Duval County, roughly 20 miles west of Jacksonville.
No one was hurt in the crash, which closed part of the interstate, WTLV reported. Though a beekeeper was called to gather the loose bees, state troopers asked people in the area to be cautious.
It’s not the first time a crash has left unexpected debris on a Florida road. Throughout the years, loads of items ranging from cow poop to $180,000 in coins have littered the pavement, the Miami Herald reported in May 2022.
